Heartbreaking reason Prince Philip’s sisters were not invited to his wedding - revealed - Express

As The Crown returns for a third season, the spotlight is once again on the private life of the Queen, including her relationship with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. Philip was born in 1921 into the Greek royal family, but his family fled the country when he was just an infant after an anti-Monarchist movement forced them into exile. Before marrying Princess Elizabeth he had to give up his titles and place in line of succession to the Greek throne.

He was naturalised as a British citizen, became Philip Mountbatten and was confirmed in the Church of England.

However, he could not invite his four older sisters – Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie and Sophie – to his wedding, as they were all married to Germans – three of whom had Nazi connections – as wartime memories were still fresh.

All his sisters ended up marrying into German aristocratic circles because of the journey the family took after leaving Greece.

At first in 1922 they all fled to France but were soon separated.

Philip’s mother – Princess Alice of Battenberg – was committed to a psychiatric institution, while his father – Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark – relocated to the south of France, maintaining limited contact with the rest of the family.

Philip attended MacJannet American School before being sent to the UK to study at the Cheam School.

In the Thirties, he relocated to a school in Germany and then moved again to Scotland’s Gordonstoun School, founded by Jewish headmaster Kurt Hanh following the rise of the Nazis.

However, his sisters stayed in Germany and all married German aristocrats.

Princess Cecilie, born in 1911, married Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse in 1931.

They joined the Nazi Party in 1937 but just a few months later Cecilie, aged 26, her husband, their two young sons and her unborn baby were killed in an aeroplane crash.

Their daughter lived another two years but died from meningitis in 1939.

Princess Sophie, born in 1914, married Prince Christoph of Hesse in 1930 aged just 16.

Christoph was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria through her eldest daughter Victoria, Princess Royal.

He was a director in the Third Reich’s Ministry of Air Forces and a high ranking SS officer.

They had five children together but Christoph was killed in an aeroplane accident in a war zone of the Apennine mountains in Italy in 1943.

Sophie later remarried to Prince George William of Hanover in 1946, which whom she had a further three children.

Sophie was a frequent visitor to her brother Prince Philip later in life and godmother to Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, until her death in 2001.
