Keanu Reeves rarely appears with a woman by his side. Perhaps that’s why, when he finally did, it caused such confusion. Fans thought he was with a completely different woman. Keanu Reeves is dating Alexandra Grant
Reeves made his first red-carpet appearance with a girlfriend in over 35 years, at the LACMA Art and Film Gala in Los Angeles, confirming his relationship with Alexandra Grant. The 46-year-old, artist has known Reeves for some time.
In fact, they’ve published two books together in which Grant illustrated Reeves’ poetry. The books, published in 2011 and 2016, have been dubbed “grownup’s picture books” on Amazon. But the couple only just became an item earlier this year.
According to People, Reeves is very happy to have found Grant. “Keanu wants to openly share his life with her,” a source said. “He is extremely happy and grateful to have Alex in his life.”
Before Grant, Reeves hasn’t been very lucky in love. His last relationship with Jennifer Syme ended in tragedy. Their daughter was stillborn in 2000, and then less than two years later, Syme was killed in a car accident.
After the loss, Reeves struggled for a long time, especially with love. A friend of the actors told People: “Sometimes, it’s almost like he doesn’t trust himself to have a relationship with anyone.”
Fans confused Helen Mirren for Keanu Reeves’ girlfriend
During their recent appearance on the red carpet, fans mistook the identity of the woman with Reeves. Maybe it’s because of her silver hair, but several people thought Grant was 74-year-old actress Helen Mirren.
Twitter was full of people voicing their confusion. “Y’all I’m not gonna lie,” said one user, “I didn’t have my glasses on the first time I saw it today and I thought Keanu Reeves was dating Helen Mirren.”
Some were happy to see an actor dating someone closer to his own age, but others commented on the fact that Reeves dating an “age-appropriate” woman caused fans to assume she was elderly.
“The fact that some people are mistaking Keanu Reeves age-appropriate girlfriend with Helen Mirren is wild. In Hollywood, if you’re not 24, you might as well be 70,” tweeted comedian Whitney Cummings.
Grant is different than the average woman in Hollywood. She seems to have embraced her age, by not bothering to cover her silver hair or act younger than she is. Instead, she wears it with pride and confidence. It’s a beautiful thing, and something we need more of from our role models.
Helen Mirren was flattered by the mix-up
There was one person that definitely wasn’t offended at the mixup: Mirren thought it was flattering.
“I saw that …” Mirren told Entertainment Tonight. “That was very flattering on me, you know, because she’s obviously lovely.”
And she has every right to be flattered. At 74 years old, to be confused with a woman that’s 24 years younger is quite the compliment. But, Mirren has aged extremely well. Few would guess that she is in her seventies without being told. Mirren looks like a woman decades younger than she is.
Although they aren’t dating as some had thought, Mirren and Reeves are good friends. They’ve known each other since 1997 when Reeves starred in The Devil’s Advocate, which Mirren’s husband of 22 years, Taylor Hackford produced.
Mirren had nothing but good things to say about the couple and the whole online mixup. “She’s a lucky girl and I’m sure that he’s a lucky boy,” she said.
