Princess Margaret’s savage takedown of Twiggy revealed: 'Who are you?' - Express

Margaret was known as the rebellious younger sister of the current Queen. She first hit the headlines when she was not permitted to marry her lover, Group Captain Peter Townsend – her father’s equerry and a divorcee 16 years her senior. The two could not be together because Margaret was forced to choose between her loyalties to the crown and her romance, as marrying a divorcee would have been against the teachings of the Church of England at the time – she chose royal life.

She went on to marry Anthony Armstrong-Jones, who became Lord Snowdon. It was a glamorous marriage and for a time they were considered one of Britain’s ‘It’ couples – but it soon turned sour and they divorced in 1978.

As the third series of ‘The Crown’ has shown, Margaret developed a reputation for drinking, smoking and staying up late. The series even portrays her as partying with former President Lyndon Johnson, although it is not known how accurate that account is.

In December 2017, Vanity Fair revealed the ‘13 Real-life Princess Margaret stories that’ll make you love her more’.

Reporter Julie Miller explained: “As popular Margaret lore goes, the princess was seated next to Sixties supermodel Twiggy at a dinner party.

“The royal proceeded to ignore her seatmate until, about two hours later, Margaret turned to the model and asked: ‘And who are you?’

“Twiggy replied: ‘I’m Lesley Hornby, ma’am, but people call me Twiggy.’

“Margaret responded: ‘How unfortunate,’ and turned away again.”

Twiggy was considered a huge icon at the time and some thought she defined the fashion industry during the Sixties and Seventies.

She was called Twigs by her hairdresser when she was just 15. Her first newspaper interview with the Daily Express in 1966 dubbed her ‘Twiggy’ throughout the piece and said she was ‘the Face of ’66’, marking the beginning of her rise through the ranks of fame.

“Obediently, all the guests stopped dancing and stood listening to the Princess’s performance.

“She had just launched into ‘Let’s Do It’ when, from the back of the crowds ballroom, came loud sounds of booing and barracking.

"The rest of the place fell silent. Mortified by this unprecedented show of hostility, the Princess abandoned the microphone and hurried out of the room.”

Mr Aronson said Francis Bacon was reportedly the “culprit”.

The artist later explained: “Her singing really was awful. Someone had to stop her.”

Helena Bonham-Carter is playing Margaret in series three and four, following on from Vanessa Kirby who took on the role during the first two series.
