Dwayne Johnson is revealing why it took so long to say “I do” to Lauren Hashian.
The Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star, 47, opened up about his intimate August wedding in a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, and why it took him 12 years and two kids to tie the knot with the singer/songwriter.
“My divorce did a number on me,” the actor told the Wall Street Journal of his split from Dany Garcia, who remains his business partner and serves as co-CEO of his various companies. “I wasn’t fearful of getting married again, there was just some hesitancy. But Lauren was incredibly patient: ‘I love you, you love me, we have this amazing life together—no presh.’”
The Rock admitted that he wasn’t looking for love when he met Hashian, then an event planner, in 2007.
“Within 30 seconds, I thought, Wow, this girl’s stunning,” he recalled. “At the time, I was going through my breakup with Dany, and she was just coming off a big breakup too. Ironically, when you’re not looking for something, the power of the universe kind of takes over.”
Their engagement and the Kauai wedding all took place within 72 hours, Johnson revealed. And while rattling off the guest list, he confirmed that his daughter with Garcia, Simone Johnson, was not in attendance at the impromptu affair. (Don’t look too far into it, however, father and daughter are still tight enough to share locations on their phone, the article notes. That says a lot — she’s in college.)
“Nine adults. Tight, tight circle,” Johnson said of the tiny wedding guest list. The attendees from his side he said were his mom and close friend/producing partner, Hiram Garcia (his ex-wife’s brother). Johnson and Hashian’s daughters, Jasmine, 3, and Tiana Gia, 1, were the flower girls at the wedding, which included Hawaiian and Samoan songs and prayers for blessings from their ancestors.
Of the extremely early wedding start time — 8 a.m. — he joked, “I’ve been up since 4, I’ve got an 8:30 workout — I gotta get this going, get to the part where ‘I do!’”
Johnson also talked about paparazzi-proofing the wedding venue — on a dramatic cliff overlooking the Pacific. However, it turned out he didn’t need to.
“We had a full security detail in case there were helicopters,” he said. “But there was no press, no paparazzi. No one knew. I was shocked but so grateful. My life is so loud and noisy; the fact that it was quiet was a big win.”
Johnson also showed off his wedding ring — described as “solid gold, studded with diamonds and roughly the size of a half-dollar” — during the interview.
“I’m not really a bling guy,” he admitted. “But, you know—wedding band.” However, he also said he’s having several others made that are work-out friendly. “One is from a bull’s horn,” he said. “And the other is from a Tyrannosaurus rex bone. Pretty cool, right?”
Johnson also revealed that and his bride will be relocating their family to Atlanta in the next few years, so that they can be close to where the majority of his work takes place. He said he bought a new property on a lake that he’s prepping for optimal fishing.
“In the last three years — and this isn’t hyperbole — we’ve had to move 50 times,” Johnson said. “I’m in a nice position now where we can make sure that a big part if not all of our production is in Atlanta. So that’s the goal.”
