Royal wedding dress secrets: The hidden meaning behind one important wedding dress - Express

Royal weddings are a time of celebration, often televised around the world for everyone to bear witness. Whether it is the British, Norwegian or Belgian royal families, each royal wedding holds a special place in history.

When Queen Mathilde wed the heir to the throne of Belgium, Philippe, the celebration was every bit the extravagant ceremony royal fans have grown to expect.

Philippe and Belgian aristocrat Mathilde d’Udekem d’Acoz met while playing tennis in 1996.

Mathilde was a talented speech therapist and went on to have her own practice in Brussels.

The royal couple kept their relationship a secret from the public and when three years later their engagement was announced it shocked the country.

Now, 20 years on from their nuptials, Express.co.uk takes a look back at the lavish wedding dress Mathilde wore.

The wedding took place on December 4, 1999, with not one, but two ceremonies.

Mathilde’s marriage to Philippe was a special one, as it saw her become the first Belgian born woman in line to be the queen of her country.

The first of the two weddings took place at the Town of Hall of Brussels with a civil ceremony, and the second at the grand Cathedral of St Michel and St Gudule.

For her dress, Mathilde chose a Belgian designer to underpin her role as the first home-born consort her country would ever have.

The designer was Edouard Vermeulen of the design house, Natan, and incidentally, this was the last major royal wedding dress of the 20th century.

Mathilde also paid tribute to brides gone past, with a lace veil borrowed from her new mother-in-law, Queen Paola.

This particular veil was an heirloom which had been in the family of Paola - who came from Italy - for decades.

The veil was secured by a tiara loaned to Mathilde by Queen Paola - but originally had belonged to Queen Elisabeth of the Belgians.

Queen Elisabeth was the great-grandmother of bridegroom Philippe.

Mathilde became Queen 14 years after her wedding to Philippe when he succeeded to the throne.

King Albert II abdicated the throne on July 21, 2013, due to health reasons, handing the reign to his son.

When her husband took the throne, Mathilde was then known as the Queen consort of the Belgians.

Mathilde and Philippe have four children, Princess Elisabeth, Duchess of Brabant, Prince Gabriel, Prince Emmanuel and Princess Eléonore.

The couple’s eldest child Princess Elisabeth is the first in line to the throne and ahead of her younger brothers and sister, who are second, third, and fourth in line to succeed.

This is due to a change in Belgian succession laws in 1991, allowing for the eldest child to succeed, regardless of gender.
