Season three of Netflix drama The Crown chronicles the making of the Royal Family documentary and shows Prince Philip (played by Tobias Menzies) to be the energetic force behind it.
Menzies has spoken about his role and hailed Prince Philip as a moderniser.
He said: “I was struck that he seems to be a man with lots of different sides and has a great deal of contradiction in him.
“You could argue that his position is part of a more traditional, reactionary institution and yet within that he is a moderniser.
“He has been very formative in the modernising of that family as they are now.
“We’ve already seen him argue for the coronation to be filmed, and there’s another instance in this season where he makes a documentary about the family.
“Again, it’s an attempt to modernise the family and make them more outward-facing.
“He’s clearly highly thoughtful about his role and who he is. The consort position is a rather indeterminate position, so you have to make of it what you want.
“I think he’s been very energetic and thoughtful about doing that and what he’s made of the position.
“And yet he also has a temper on him.
