Royal revelation: Why Meghan did not stand with Queen, Kate and Camilla on Remembrance Day - Express

Meghan admitted in ITV documentary ‘Harry and Meghan: An African Journey’  that she was finding it tough to adjust to life in the spotlight. Her husband Prince Harry also hinted that there was indeed a rift between him and Prince William, claiming that as brothers they have “good days” and “bad days”. As such an emotional display is rarely seen in the Royal Family, the rest of the Firm are reportedly concerned and “worried” about Meghan and Harry, although it has been some months since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen with the rest of the family. All eyes will be on the two when they attend Remembrance Day at the weekend with the rest of their relatives.

Meghan attended the annual event for the first time last year, when it was the 100th anniversary of Remembrance Sunday.

As described on People.com, she appeared on the balcony overlooking the Cenotaph in London in the morning.

However, she appeared segregated from the rest of the Royal Family when she stood by a different window balcony.

The Queen, Kate and Camilla were all seen standing together on one platform, while Meghan stood with the German First Lady, Elke Budenbender, wife of President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

While fans were initially confused, People.com clarified that the distance between the Duchess of Sussex and her family “doesn’t mean she was slighted”.

Reporters Maria Pasquini and Simon Perry explained how there were also practical limitations: “As the balconies of each window are small, it’s nearly impossible to fit more than three or four women on each – and although Meghan didn’t join her family members, she was given a very important position of her own.”

Royal protocol also plays a part in the positioning of the royals: “During official events, the Royal Family arranges themselves according to a royal ‘pecking order’.

“For instance, when Meghan made her official Trooping the Colour debut in June, she wasn’t front and centre on the palace balcony, and instead stood behind Kate and since William.”

They continued: “There’s no one laying this out, telling her where to stand. And there were a lot of kids who everyone would want at the front."

An article in Harpers Bazaar from 2018 added: “Clearly, there was no ill intention regarding Meghan’s position on the balcony and later in the day, the fab four ruined at Westminster Abbey, much to the delight of their fans.”

Hello! magazine also referenced how Prince Philip’s absence from the event also impacted everyone’s positions on the balcony. He was 97 at the time so had already retired from royal duties, but if he had been there he would have stood on the balcony next to the Queen instead.

Meghan broke royal protocol several times for walking in front of Harry when she first began to attend royal functions.

The more senior royal always has to walk into a room to show an order of precedence. The Queen, for instance, has always walked one step in front of her husband.

Harry has had to halt Meghan in the past to prevent her from overtaking Her Majesty, too.
