A new fast-casual Turkish spot has opened up shop in the neighborhood. Located at 1096 Union St. in Russian Hill, the fresh arrival is called Sumac.
Inspired by the street food of Istanbul, Sumac offers a selection of rice bowls, salads and sandwiches topped with different proteins. Check out the chicken rice bowl with seasonal veggies and sumac labneh, the salad with red lentil balls and seasoned feta, and the Butcher's Kofte Sandwich, featuring lamb and beef meatballs, chickpea salad and fresh herb labneh. Sides include warm pita and an assortment of dips, and for dessert, there's homemade banana pudding.
With a 4.5-star rating out of 14 reviews on Yelp so far, Sumac has already made a good impression.
Jack H., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Dec. 14, wrote, "The meatballs were some of the best I've had: delicate, juicy, flavorful. The chicken was equally tender and flavorful. They have really nailed the flavor profiles for those two proteins!"
Yelper Johnny F. noted, “OMG. Delicious and fresh."
Swing on by to take a peek for yourself: Sumac is open from 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and 11 a.m.–10 p.m. on Friday-Sunday.
