Tony Blair’s relationship with the Royal Family while he was at Number 10 was not an easy one. His wife Cherie did not curtsey to the Queen on her first visit to Balmoral in 1997, and wore a trouser suit - which allegedly left the Queen mother “mortified”. Her Majesty’s interests clashed with Mr Blair’s too.
For this reason, the tradition annual visit by the Prime Minister to Balmoral reportedly became something of an ordeal for the Labour leader and the lengths of their stays were kept to a minimum.
It was during one of these visits though, that Prince William became incredibly close to Mr Blair, developing a confider-confidante relationship.
In his 2010 autobiography “A Journey”, Mr Blair published all the private conversation he had held with the future King and exposed a painful truth of his future as King.
Mr Blair claimed that William hated the prison walls of his destiny.
He wrote: “He knew now, if he didn’t before, what being a Prince and a King meant.
“For all the sense of duty, the prison walls of hereditary tradition must have seemed too high a price to pay.
Mr Blair went on to say that the Duke of Cambridge was angry at being made to play a public role while he was grieving for his mum.
He said: “I had also spoken to William who was not only still grieving but angry.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did not invite Mr Blair at their 2011 royal wedding, despite it being a “semi-state” occasion.
By contrast, his Conservative predecessors, Sir John Major and Baroness Thatcher, received invitations.
Lady Thatcher declined on health grounds but Sir John attended.
A spokesman for St James’s Palace said Mr Blair had not received an invitation because he was not a Knight of the Garter, unlike Sir John and Lady Thatcher.
However, Labour MPs said it was “surprising” and “odd” that Mr Blair had been snubbed on what was a “great British occasion”.
