Kate is now considered to be one of the key figures within the Royal Family. As she is married to the second-in-line to the throne, Prince William, many look to her as the future Queen consort. However, her addition to The Firm in 2011 meant royal protocol had to be adjusted.
As a 2012 column written by Richard Eden and published for The Daily Telegraph revealed, the Order of Precedence was re-jigged to accommodate William’s new wife.
Mr Eden explained: “Mandrake hears that the Queen has updated the Order of Precedence in the Royal Household to take into account the Duke of Cambridge’s wife.”
Mandrake is the now-defunct diary column which ran in the Daily Telegraph until 2014.
He continued: “The new rules of Court make it clear that the former Kate Middleton, when she is not accompanied by Prince William, must curtsy to the ‘blood princesses’, the Princess Royal, Princess Alexandra, and the daughters of the Duke of York, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.
“When William is with her, Kate does not need to bend the knee to either of them, but she must curtsy to the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
“Despite being married to the Queen’s son, the Countess of Wessex will, however, have to curtsy to Kate, even when William is not present.”
The news came from a private document that was sent around the Royal Household.
It was called ‘Precedence of the Royal Family to be observed at Court’, compiled by the Queen in 2005 and updated for Kate’s official entry to The Firm in 2012. The paper provided clear instructions for how the family must behave with one another at official events.
Charles’ second marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles in 2005 did apparently ruffle some feathers because of the impact it had on royal protocol – Sophie, Countess of Wessex, was reportedly upset that she had been placed below Camilla, according to Mr Eden.

“For example, Camilla was forced to wait in the drizzle outside the Guards Chapel, Windsor, for the arrival of Princess Anne at a memorial service in 2006 because Charles had not accompanied her.”
Kate is not the only relatively new addition to the Royal Family who had to fit into the Order of Precedence.
Royal fans were confused recently when Meghan Markle was separated from the Queen, Camilla and Kate during the annual Remembrance service in November, but the royals were in fact standing in order of precedence.
Meghan is further down in the order because Harry is only sixth-in-line to the throne and therefore had to stand on a less prominent balcony.
The Duchess of Sussex also has to curtsey to more members of The Firm when her husband is not present, in comparison to Kate.
However, she has tried to flout the protocol on occasion.
When first dating Harry she allegedly tried to hug the Kensington Palace guards, explaining: “I’m American, I hug.”
She also shocked royal fans when she broke protocol and hugged Harry’s ex Chelsy Davy at her own wedding last year.
